Hello Dennis,

Very fruitful day yesterday. I spent some six hours on your research between the Archives and Lincoln Central Library.

In reply to your lastest email - sounds ok to me. I shall be sending you a printout of the ATKINS tree when I get my computer talking to my printer. For some reason they have "fallen out" of favour with each other and I shall have to wait until my computer literate son comes for a visit (next week I hope!). The printouts of the families will make sense of the whole picture.

With regard to "Workhouses" - no these are not prisons - they are more institutions where people/families found themselves when they were not capable of fending for themselves, e.g. when a man could not earn enough to feed his family; or someone who is too old/infirm to work; or they have an affliction which unables them to work. In many cases their family members are too poor or didn't have enough room (or didn't want) to look after the person in question. The workhouses took in work from various sources for the "inmates" to do to earn their keep. For example the women would do laundry sent in from maybe the Inns, etc. in the area.

Now to the findings of yesterday. I firstly enquired about the marriage of William JACKSON and Mary GRIMES in 1803 Burgh le Marsh. No, the Archives do not have the marriage register, only the Book of Banns and they agree with me that the marriage would have taken place during the week following the 10th April. They presume, as I did, that the marriage register must have been either lost or destroyed as all the other registers of that time had been lodged with the Archives so there was no reason why the marriage register was not, if it existed. I took a copy of the Banns.

I looked for Mary GRIME's baptism in Burgh, but could not find her. I resorted to the IGI and the nearest Mary GRIME to be baptised and of feasible age was a Mary GRIME baptised on 29th April, 1778 in Candlesby - a village not far from Burgh le Marsh. I looked at this and it only gave a John GRIME as father, the mother's name was either missed off or time had eroded it. Looking further at the Candlesby baptisms I noted a John GRIME baptised to a John and Mary GRIME on 22 Mar 1781 and presume that this family were the one and same as Mary's. I took a copy of the entry for Mary but cannot confirm 100% that this is her family. I would need to obtain Mary JACKSON's age on her demise to do this. The first copy did not come out too well, so had to take another.

I proceeded to Edwin JEFFERY and visited Lincoln Central Library - limited time there - they will only let you have the reader which takes photocopies for one hour at a time! I searched all the JEFFERY (and variants) entries around Stickford and Firsby in the 1871 census, as we know from the 1881 census that he and his family were in Stickford and some children born in Firsby. No entries came up for Stickford but two for Stickney - looked at these but Edwin not there and likewise for Firsby.

Not to be beaten I went to the 1861 census and found him and family in Firsby. He was listed as Edward not Edwin but it is the same family. Edwin was down as aged 35, Shepherd, born Hagworthingham. Elizabeth, wife, aged 33, born Hull, Yorkshire (she was born in Goole according to the 1881 census!). Family: George, aged 13; Thomas aged 11; Charlotte aged 8; Emma aged 4; Matilda aged 2 and Harriot aged 3 months - all children born Hagworthingham. Harriet is on the 1881 census with Edwin and Elizabeth in Stickford but stated that she was born in Firsby in the 1881 census, together with Isabella, dau., aged 16 born Firsby.

I then went to the 1851 census of Firsby and took a copy of that. In this census Edwin was aged 27, Ag Lab, born Hagworthingham. Elizabeth, wife, aged 24, born Hull, Yorkshire. Children: Betsy aged 4 and George aged 3 both born in Hagworthingham; Thomas, aged 1 and Edwin aged under 2 months both born Firsby.

So, Dennis, we have conflicting birthyears for Edwin. 1881 census = 1828; 1861 census = 1826 and 1851 census = 1824. I verily think that 1824 is correct and he "knocked off" a few years on every census making him younger each time!!! Elizabeth's age was fairly consistent for the 1851 and 1861 census, but she too lost two/three years off her age in the 1881 census. Very common in my experience!

The common denominator for Edwin was that he was born in Hagworthingham, so I went the baptisms between 1823 and 1829 and found only one entry for an Edwin JEFFERY. Son of Thomas and Mary JEFFERYS, entry 190, born on 31st August and baptised on 14 Sept 1823. Thomas was described as being a "butcher". I think we can safely say this is his family. I took a copy of this entry.

Children of the family headed by Thomas and Mary JEFFERY were :

John bap: 17 Dec 1815
Francis bap 27 Apr 1817 (male)
Walls bap: 07 Mar 1819
Thomas bap: 06 May 1821
Edwin bap: 14 Sep 1823
Elizabeth bap: 17 Jun 1825
Lucy Ann bap: 14 Feb 1830

Francis JEFFERY was found in the National Burial Index (NBI) to be buried on 20 March 1877 aged 60 in Hagworthingham.

John JEFFERY is on the 1881 census at the Royal Oak, Candlesby as a lodger, ag lab, married, aged 65, born Hagworthingham - lodging with a John KIDD and family who were Farmers and Innkeepers. Also lodging with this family was an Arthur JEFFERY, ag lab, aged 13 born Hagworthingham. No sign of John's wife living with this family.

Also in the 1881 census I found Lucy Ann JEFFREY, sister-in-law, ag lab daughter, unmarried, age 50, born Hagworthingham living in the household of James TODD in Hagworthingham. James TODD's wife was Elizabeth TODD (nee JEFFERY) age 54, born Hagworthingham. Elizabeth's baptism was in 1825 so she should have had an age of 56 rather than 54 - did she knock off a few years also!!! We know this is Lucy Ann's sister as Lucy Ann was described as "sister-in-law" to the Head of the household, James TODD. James TODD was aged 50 born Hemingsby, so maybe Elizabeth reduced her age - her being 6 years older than her husband! The children of James and Elizabeth TODD were : Mary, age 22, unmarried, born Hagworthingham; Walls, age 14, born Hagworthingham; and John E., age 12, born Aswardby. Also living in this household was a Thomas W. JEFFREY, aged 5, born Mavis Enderby, described as a grandson of James TODD.
NB: Note the spelling of JEFFERY changed - this would have been the enumerators spelling when taking the census.

I looked for the marriage between Thomas JEFFERY and Mary ? - found a marriage between Thomas JEFFERYES and Mary HODGKINSON on 22 January 1815 in Hagworthingham, witnesses: William BAILEY and what looks like Elizabeth JEFFERY. I took of a copy of this entry.

I noted from the NBI that a Thomas JEFFERY died 1866 and looked at the parish register burials for Hagworthingham and took a copy of the entry. The details were that he was buried on the 18th March 1866, aged 84 years (again his surname was spelt JEFFREY) which gives us a birthyear of circa 1782. Mary JEFFERY (nee HODGKINSON) was buried on 05 Mar 1857, age 71, Hagworthingham - giving us a birthyear of circa 1786.

I could not find a Thomas JEFFERY baptised in Haworthingham circa 1782 and looked at the IGI for possibilities and found him baptised on 08 July 1781 in St. Martins, Welton le Marsh, son of Walls and Elizabeth JEFFERY. The fact that his father was called "Walls" and he named one of his sons, Walls, confirms that this is his family as it is not a very common name. I suspect strongly that we will find a WALLS marriage somewhere along the line!!

I looked at the Welton le Marsh parish register baptisms and found a very faded page but managed to acquire a near decent copy (2nd try). This baptism register was very badly damaged by damp so I had to resort to the IGI for other siblings. I found a Benjamin JEFFERY baptised 19 Mar 1780 Welton le Marsh. I suspect that a William JEFFERY baptised 26 Feb 1778 Hagnaby by Spilsby is also their child as I will explain later.

Likewise, I think this family went from Welton le Marsh to Winceby as I found :

Sarah JEFFERY bap: 17 Nov 1786 Winceby
Eleanor JEFFERY bap: 20 Apr 1785 Winceby
Walls JEFFERY bap: 05 Oct 1789 Winceby

In the marriage index I found a Walls JEFFERY marrying an Elizabeth BARNFATHER on 5th June 1777 Hagworthingham. The entry gave "Whals JEFFERIES of the Parish of Hagnaby and Elizabeth BARNFATHER, both single persons who married by licence by me, ?????????, 5th June 1777". I took a copy. The fact that Walls was of Hagnaby makes me believe that William bap. 1778 in Hagnaby was indeed Walls and Elizabeth's first born.

I looked at the Wills Index and noted a Walls JEFFERY reference LCC WILLS 1812/179 and requested sight of it. The Will gave :

Walls JEFFERY of Hagworthingham, Grazier.
Wife: Elizabeth - £30 per annum
Dau: Ann - £30 per annum
mentioned he had a Windmill, lands and hereditaments (buildings) "purchased by me of Elizabeth BARNFATHER and William BARNFATHER" in Mavis Enderby. I suspect that this Elizabeth and William BARNFATHER were father and daughter (giving Elizabeth's maiden name prior to her marriage to Walls JEFFERY). The Will bestowed the lands to son, William JEFFERY. Lands in Bolingbroke to youngest son, John JEFFERY. To sons, Benjamin, Thomas, Francis, Walls, John and daughters, Eleanor and Mary, £200 each. John and Mary to get theirs after they attained the age of 21. Wife, Elizabeth, to get "all plate, linen and furniture" to the value of £80. Son, William, to be sole executor. The Will was dated 24 March 1810 and proved on 26th Sept 1812 and the amount left to be under £450.

TIIVEL
FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCH. 05.01.2002

Aim on the research was to find descendants of Henri Tihwel's (of orthodox confession) parents and of Hans Tihwel's birth mother's (of Lutheran confession) parents.

According to the information provided by the client Hans Tihwel lived in Viljandi, later moved to Latvia and England. We looked for Hans's birth registration in Viljandi Lutheran congregations and recordings about him from Viljandi orthodox congregation's materials, but did not find any information about him. The 1858 soul revision of Viljandi did not show any Tihwels.

As the name Tihwel would be spelled Tiivel in present Estonian we looked for the name in the onomastical database. That showed Koorküla manorial district in Helme parish in Viljandi county as the only place where the name Tiivel (originally Tiwel) was given to a peasant family in 1820s when peasants received last names in Livonian province. Unfortunately the commune records of Koorküla have not preserved. Helme-Tõrva orthodox congregation records that are available to researchers begin from 1911. Most of the older records are not available to researchers until late 2003 or 2004.

Although we knew from the client that Hans's father was of orthodox confession we looked for registers of parishioners of Helme Lutheran congregation and found the right family from there.

The Tiivel family was extremely large family. Conversion to orthodox began in 1840s, so Hendrik could have been baptized already in orthodox congregation. It is possible to find more information about the descendants of Hendrik's parents after the older orthodox records begin available. It is possible to do some research already now (birth, death and marriage records from 1847, 1849-1852, 1857-1863 are available), but it takes longer time to use those without other records that show the family all together. And as we found only one sister of Hendrik, then there might not be any other descendants at all. It is possible that Hendrik had more siblings born after 1850.

More information about the descendants of the Karu family and also Hans's sister Ella-Marie can be easily found, but the time limit did not let us do that. The 1997 database we used to find some persons is not complete and may not considered a reliable source.

Birth records of orthodox congregations of Viljandi county from 1848 are not available for researchers. -1850- sr: in Laagaste 25 farm. -1858- sr: in Anipõlde 38 farm, there were very many families registered in that farm, including some other Tiivels, but they were not closely related to Hendrik. In 1858 sr the only Hendrik Tiivel in Koorküla md was this Hendrik. It is very likely that this is the person we were looking for, although it must be confirmed with other records not available at the moment. No Hendrik Tiivel is found in Koorküla md in Helme congregation's registers of parishioners 1841-1850 (one found, but he lived only 1843-1845) and 1851-1861. [-1874-1897- of orthodox confession]. Married December 1875 [not in Helme congregation]. 1879- supervisor in Koorküla manor. As he was recorded in the Helme congregation's registers of parishioners only as a husband of a Lutheran woman, no more information about him is available in the registers. It is likely, as his daughter was born in Tõlliste that he moved there later. Tõlliste is by a railroad and next to Tartu-Valga-Riga road. We did not find any information about his other marriages, but those must have been registered in orthodox congregations and we could not use those.
Wife Reet (Reet) Karu. *10.12.1855 in Koorküla. Confirmed 1874 in Helme congregation. +23.01.1882. [in Koorküla md]. [Buried in Helme congregation].
Children:
I. d. Minna (Minna) Tiivel. *23.11.1876 in Koorküla md. (*)02.12.1876 [in Helme congregation]. +02.02.1878 [in Koorküla md]. [Buried in Helme congregation].
II. s. Hans (Hans) Tiivel. *27.03.1879 in Koorküla manor. (*)02.04.1879 in Helme congregation by local schoolteacher. G: single hired hand [manor servant?] Hans Ilves, single hired hand [manor servant?] Aadu Grünwaldt, maid Riin Vastison. 1889 joined Valmiera congregation. According to new calendar his birth date should be 08.04.1879.
III. d. Ella-Marie (Ella Marie) Tiivel. *24.09.1881 in Tõlliste md. (*)02.10.1881 [in Helme congregation]. 1899 joined Valga congregation.

There was Ann Tiivel marked under number II as Hendrik Tiivel was under number I in a register of parishioners 1874-1896. There were other Tiivels before them, but they had a separate numeration. Ann could be Hendrik's sister, but their father's names are not listed in this register. Ann was probably also baptized Lutheran, she was certainly Lutheran in 1879 when she was confirmed. Kristjan is in the register right after Ann, but without any number, because he was orthodox. There are several Tiivel families in the register of parishioners who could be families of Hendrik's siblings, but at this point it is difficult to determine that.

Ann (An) Tiivel. *ca 1853 in Koorküla md. Births of orthodox congregations of Viljandi county from 1853 are not available for researchers. Confirmed 1879 in Helme congregation. We did not find her confirmation from 1879 Helme confirmation records, the remark could be a mistake (wrong year - she could have been confirmed 1869) or about someone else (his husband), but we did not find anyone to connect with Ann from 1879 lists of confirmed. Married 1880 [outside Helme congregation]. 1880 left Helme congregation.
Husband Frits (Fritz) Ehrlich.

Kristjan (Christian, Kristjan) Tiivel. -1878- Lutheran, later orthodox [until death]. [+<1896].
Wife Ann (An, Ann) Rimmel. *18.02.1853. Baptized in orthodox congregation. -1878- Lutheran. Later until 23.04.1906 orthodox, after that again Lutheran. +01.03.1920 [in Tartu], death registered in Tartu Peetri congregation.
1. d. Mari (Mari, Marri) Tiivel. *25.11.1878 in Kaaba farm. (*)17.12.1878 in Helme congregation by local schoolteacher. G: maid Mari Krimmel, maid Liis Sikk, farmhand Aadu Lill. Confirmed 1896 in Helme congregation. 1906 joined Tartu Peetri congregation.

Hi, Dennis!
Yes, I never can tell when I'll have a chance to read and write e-mail. I just have to do it when I can.

In response to yours of June 1st. the following: I did, indeed, look at the Culbertson-Carpenter list, and my goodness, it contains information about that branch of the family Inever had before! Thank you, so much, for sharing it with me.
I would indeed like to be in touch with Carol Culbertson, anmd you may, of course, give her my email address, and share any information with her whish I send/have sent to you. I am curious as to her relation ship to Ruth Culbertson, whom my mother and I met when visiting the Porters in Latonia Station, Kentucky one time
I believe the Porters were related to the Culbertsons in some manner. Since I have Carol's address now, I'll get in touch with her.

In answer to your questions:
1. I do not know when Anna and her family relocated in Kansas cuty from Kentucky. It was when Statira was between 13 and 17 years of age, which would be 1891-1895.
2. I do not know where or when the split occurred betyween Anna and Zachary Sr.
.but I believer it was during that time period. I also do not know when she met Rye Mullins, or where, nor when they were married; allI know is, that when they left the children in Kansas City, they left in a covered wagon, aaand my mother Statira was anguished about their safety during the trip to Oklahoma.
3 I also do not know when Rye died, or when Anna went to California, or when she met and married Mr. Wade, nor do I know his full name. I believe the Mullins children grew up with Rye and Anna until ????.
4. Details are also sketchy as to when Millard and the rest of the children went to Oklahoma to be with Rye and Anna, nor when they (except Millard) went to Denver
to be with Statira
5. I have no clue as to where Zachary Sr. lived in Lousiana, but he left there about 1912-1913 to come to Denver and live with Statira; he had Diabetes, and died about 1916, and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver. Nor do I know his occupation while in Louisiana. He did grow and market Tibacco in Kentucky while still there.
6 Georgie Mullins died when still a baby, I do not know where, whether in Kansas City or after Rye and Anna went to Oklahoma. My mother Statira and I went to visit visit Goldie and her husband (Puckett) in about 1926 when I was about 5 years old. Goldie and her husband owned a dairy farm near Clinton, Oklahoma, and they had three boys: Raymond, Otto(nick-named "Mutt"), and Earl, who was about my age at the time.

I am probably not much help in answering your questions, but I have dredged what information I have from the depth of memory as to conversations with Statira while she was still alive prior to 1954.
God Bless, Cousin John T. Frary

Dennis,

I was able to find an obituary for Anna Gray Waid in the San Diego Union on Jan. 20, 1925. I will transcribe the full text of that obituary below. There was also an article about the accident on the front page of the San Diego Union on Jan. 16, 1925, the headline reads "Auto Kills Aged San Diego Woman." I will not transcribe the full text of that article because it is too lengthy. If you are interested you can pay for a photocopy to be sent in the mail. If you are only interested in the info from the obituary then there is no need to request a photocopy. Please let me know if you want photocopies of the article about the accident and/or the obituary and I will give you the information on where to send your request. Our charges are $5.00 per date, $.20 per copy, and $3.00 mailing. So for 1 article it will be $8.20, for both it will be $13.40.

Dear Dennis

Further to correspondence I wish to update your file on Ulster ancestry. As discussed, we searched Cappagh Church of Ireland baptism registers as follows-:

1. 1753-87 for James Taylor and/or Sidney Culbertson
2. 1827-30 for children born to this couple

The first search were in the oldest part of the register, where some parts were so faded as to be quite unreadable. Nevertheless, our best endeavours produced four Taylor entries though no Culbertson etc. We noted some burials were included with the baptisms as follows-:
" Buried - Rebecca, daughter of Rev J Taylor, Newland, 9th March 1761
" Baptised - [illegible] - daughter of Rev Mr Taylor, Newland, 16th October 1761
" Baptised - James, son of Rev James Taylor, Newland, 20th January 1765
" Baptised - William, son of Rev James Taylor, Newland, 18th March 1866
The search of the later period produced the following information on Taylor - but again no Culbertson etc entries-:
" Baptised - John, son of Jas Taylor of Glengowna, 4th December 1830
" Baptised - James, son of James Taylor, Glengowna, 30th November 1831
In the manner of some church registers of the time, there is no information relating to the mother and so it is not possible to draw any definite conclusions. It is possible that this James Taylor (father of John and James) was indeed married to a Sidney Culbertson, but it will be very difficult to establish this given the many gaps in the marriage records. You believe that they married circa 1800-10 period, and if so it is unlikely they would be having children as late as 1830-31. If you feel they may have married after this date, then we could search Cappagh marriages up to 1827. You will recall that we have already searched the marriage records 1801-08.

As for the earlier births, it is most unlikely that the James Taylor born 1765 is the father referred to in the birth register of 1830-31 as he would be in his mid-60s by then. Perhaps there is a generation between that we have yet to find? In any case I shall leave you to appraise this information and should you wish to explore further possible avenues please do get back at your earliest convenience. Meanwhile, all best wishes.

Tree: Family Connections

Description: Her birth date should be 11 Dec 1876 (according to the Kentucky Birth Index on ancestry.com) rather than 1878, which is likely a typo. This earlier date would also be more consistent with the 1880 census and resolve the conflict with the birth date of her younger brother.

(She was named for my great-great grandmother, Statira Bonaparte (Stephens) Bristow, who lived in the area, but I don't know of any connections between the families.)

Research performed by Merike Ivask and Fred Puss, report created by Fred Puss May, 2002.

Hi Dennis,

Sorry for the long silence. There have been sone changes with the availability of records. The RUssian Orthodox records until 1891 were handed over to a public archives in Tartu, but they will not be available to researchers for some time (maybe until September). So at the moment it is not possible to get any information from those records. However, I found something interesting and I wanted to let you know about that.

From the transcription lists (lists where people who changed their place of registration - the place where they payd taxes to, where they were under court juristiction etc) of Koorküla from the year 1895 give full informatiot of Hendrik's family: Hendrik Tiivel, born 13.09.1847, wife Anna, born 25.02.1852, sons Hans (27.03.1879), Karl (08.07.1883), Jaan (1887 - no date given), Eduard (26.09.1890), Julius (04.02.1893). They were registered to Volmari (in Latvian Valmiera) commune in Volmari county on 17.02.1895. It does not mean they actually moved that year, but they were in Volmari at least since 17.02.1895. The names are in Cyrillic in the original, so this is just a normal transcription of the names. I will include Cyrillic names in the report. And it gives the birth year of Karl as 1883, not 1882! The dates are according to old style, you have to add 12 days to get a new style date.

Still his birth was not registered in Helme orthodox church or the surrounding Lutheran churches. In 1881, when Ella Marie was born, Hendrik was a post worker (in German Postkerl, it is a mail carrier with a carriage) in Tõlliste (Tolliste, with tilde over letter o, in German Teilitz) post station. You could use http://atlas.ibs.ee to locate Tõlliste, type Tõlliste (I am not sure how you can get the o with tilde, just copy-paste from some Estonian website or my email if it arrives OK) and then press "otsi" and choose "külad: Tõlliste...". Then you can see it on the map.

What about continuing the research? Although it was said in 1894 that Hendrik's wife was Lutheran I did not find his wife from any registers of parishioners of Helme or Sangaste (Tõlliste belonged to Sangaste parish). I did not look for any Annas born on 25.02.1852 yet. But it seems I cannot find much more about Hendrik's family from Estonian records until the orthodox records become available. Even then records after 1891 will be held in the registry office where research is not allowed. They sent me some information about Hendrik already, but I cannot ask them to look through records of several years. What do you suggest?

Regards

Fred

TIIVEL

Jüri (Jürri) Tiivel.
Children:
1. s. Risto (Risto) (since <1827) Tiivel. *ca 1810. -1834- sr: in Alu 9 farm. [Married <1835]. -1850- sr: in Laagaste 25 farm, the farmer is not mentioned, several men (including Risto) registered in the farm could be the farmer. In 1858 sr the farmer was Moorits Volt (aka Rebane). Died 1850-1858. No male children found from Helme congregation birth records 1847-1849.
Wife Viiu (Wio). *ca 1813. Alive 1850. [Died, moved or remarried before 1858].
Children:
A. d. Sohvi (Soffi) Tiivel. *ca 1838. -1850- sr: in Laagaste 25 farm.
B. s. Hendrik (Hendrik, Henrik) Tiivel. *ca 1848. Birth not found in Helme congregation 1847-1849.

KARU

Toomas (Tomas) Karu, son of Aadu (Aadu). *09.05.1821 in Koorküla md. Confirmed in 1838 in Helme congregation. Married in 1841 [in Helme congregation]. [He and his family lived -1863-1875- in Kõrepaju farm]. +10.10.1903 [in Koorküla md]. [Buried in Helme congregation].
Wife Toora (Tora). *ca 1821 in Koorküla md. Confirmed in 1838 in Helme congregation. +15.08.1870 [in Koorküla md]. [Buried in Helme congregation].

Addition: Principles of report.

Hi Dennis,

Sorry for the long silence. There have been some changes with the availability of records. The Russian Orthodox records until 1891 were handed over to a public archives in Tartu, but they will not be available to researchers for some time (maybe until September). So at the moment it is not possible to get any information from those records. However, I found something interesting and I wanted to let you know about that.

>From the transcription lists (lists where people who changed their
>place of
registration - the place where they payd taxes to, where they were under court jurisdiction etc) of Koorküla from the year 1895 give full information of Hendrik's family: Hendrik Tiivel, born 13.09.1847, wife Anna, born 25.02.1852, sons Hans (27.03.1879), Karl (08.07.1883), Jaan (1887 - no date given), Eduard (26.09.1890), Julius (04.02.1893).

In 1881, when Ella Marie was born, Hendrik was a post worker (in German Postkerl, it is a mail carrier with a
carriage) in Tõlliste (Tolliste, with tilde over letter o, in German
Teilitz) post station.

Regards
Fred
